New and existing observations of the rotational velocities of Si-type Ap stars in clusters are combined to demonstrate that magnetic stars lose angular momentum after they reach the main sequence. Measurements of field stars provide additional support for this hypothesis. Mechanisms for magnetic braking are discussed, and it is shown that an interaction of the stellar magnetic field with the interstellar medium can account for the observed rate of loss of angular momentum. For Ap stars of later (non-Si) spectral type, it is likely that substantial additional magnetic braking takes place during the pre-main-sequence phase of evolution.
