Airborne, high-spectral-resolution measurements of infrared fine structure lines from the galactic H II regions NGC 7538, W49 and M8, as well as negative results for W33, S106 and Sgr A West, are presented. Observations were made of the forbidden S III (18.7 microns), and forbidden O III (52 and 88 microns), lines, and of forbidden N III (57 microns) and forbidden O I (63 microns) lines in W33, S106 and Sgr A West by a Michelson interferometer and the 91-cm telescope of the Kuiper Airborne Observatory operating at an altitude of about 12.5 km. Oxygen abundance ratios derived by combining infrared fine structure line measurements with radio data are found to be in good agreement with optical data for NGC 7538 and M8, while the derived sulfur abundance ratio for NGC 7538 is close to the cosmic ratio and greater than the optically determined value. Low sulfur ion abundance ratios for two positions in W49 A indicate that the excitation is high, although the oxygen ion abundance is much lower than expected. The infrared lines are noted to be as wide as radio recombination lines for W49 A, while for NGC 7538 they are broader than both the radio and optical lines.
