Spectrophotometric observations of the continua of six Herbig-Haro objects in the wavelength region 3200-8000 A are reported. Data was obtained from a multichannel spectrometer at 279 wavelengths for HH 1NW, HH 2A, HH 32A, HH 2H and HH 2G, and additionally from image intensified dissector scanner observations of HH 1, HH 2H and HH 24A from 3700 to 7400 A. In all the continua, the flux is observed to increase rapidly with decreasing wavelength, with an inverse power law exponent between 2.04 and 2.92. The ratio of total continuum flux to H-beta flux is found to be similar in all the objects investigated with the exception of HH 24A, which observation leads to difficulties in the dust scattering explanation of HH continua. It is argued that if the energy distributions are due to dust-scattered stellar continua, the original source must be a hot object rather than a T Tauri star as has been usually assumed.
