SIT vidicon spectrograms of RCW 86 were taken which cover the blue from 3700 A to 5100 A and the red from 5800 A to 7200 A. The H-alpha/H-beta ratio gives a reddening of 0.8 mag, implying a distance to the remnant of about 1 kpc. The observed line intensities were analyzed by using Dopita's diagnostic diagrams for optical emission from shock waves. As a result, temperatures ranging from 70,000 to 700,000 K were found, indicating shock velocities of at least 80 km/s. Severely abnormal abundance material was not found; this material should be there if, as suggested by other observations (ancient records and X-ray spectra), RCW 86 originated in the supernova explosion of the year 185 A.D.
