Meteoritic evidence is adduced in support of the hypothesis that the period immediately following the termination of planetary formation witnessed a high flux of predominantly C-class asteroidal material scattered among the planets and the asteroids adjacent to the outer asteroid belt. Phobos and Deimos are anticipated to be the most accessible of the substantial representatives of the primordial and scattered C-like asteroids, rendering them prime candidates for exploration in the course of projected Mars missions. The early, scattered flux of carbonaceous planetesimals is a little-recognized but important phase of solar system history, influencing the nature of moons, meteorites, and perhaps even atmospheres.
