The present study of the 3:1 resonance behavior of asteroids in a large-parameter region proceeds through a qualitative, semianalytical investigation of asteroid motions to a more quantitative treatment in which asteroid orbit changes are obtained with numerical integrations in the framework of a planar-elliptical three-body problem. It is found that the variations in a and sigma are complex, and that the variations in e and omega directly depend on the behavior of these elements. Virtually all numbered asteroids avoid the region in which the resonance occurs in the a-e plane; the eccentricities of most resonance-region asteroids change markedly over a 10,000-100,000 year period.
