Results will be reported from a deep XMM-Newton observation of the western radio lobe of Fornax A. Compton scattered cosmic microwave background radiation (ICCMB) from the radio lobe was imaged and a consistent non-thermal flux measured in the X-ray spectrum. While the ICCMB flux and spectrum agree with earlier measurements, significant thermal emission from the lobe was also revealed, composed of relatively cool, 0.3 keV, filamentary gas, and hotter, 0.9 keV, diffuse gas over the lobe. The ICCMB and radio data imply a magnetic pressure that is close to the pressure due to relativistic electrons. The filamentary gas is interpreted as gas lifted from near the center of NGC 1316 by the rising lobe. Its pressure is a few times the minimum total pressure of the lobe, presumably reflecting the total pressure of the lobe. The hotter thermal component is consistent with emission from an extended hot atmosphere of NGC 1316 that confines the lobe. These results imply that the pressure of non-radiating particles in the lobe is comparable to that of the radiating components. This work was supported by NASA grant NNX09AP94G.
