We discuss the temporal and spectral variability of the X-ray emission from GRBs observed using the Swift satellite. As previously noted, the flux light curve can be well described by a combination of two components which each consist of an exponential which relaxes into a power law decay, often with flares superimposed. The second component fits the shallow, plateau phase observed in the majority of GRBs. Here we find that such a two component model can also reasonably well explain the variation in X-ray spectral hardness if we assume the hardness ratio varies as a power law in time. In this parameterisation, most of the spectral variability occurs for the first (prompt) flux component but we also find evidence for modest spectral variability during at later times.
