Geomagnetic Field: Reversals

The authors study here the time distribution of the 296 reversals of the earth magnetic field in Cox's scale. They observe that an exponential distribution describes the set of reversals that occur at intervals shorter than 0.5 Ma. For the longer ones the distribution is found to fit a power law. The authors then examine the sequence in terms of deterministic behaviour and single out an attractor in a phase space, where the variable is the time length of direct or inverse polarity. Using a sliding window technique the attractor dimension is found to be close to 2 implying 2 degrees of freedom for the process which generates the reversals.
