Efforts to build Hi-Tech modern astronomical observatories for viewing space results in unbelievable technological spin offs, because these instruments require not only astronomers but skilled engineers and technicians in electronics, optics, mechanics, computer hardwares and softwares to function. There is need for African National Governments to recognize the intrinsic value of astronomy and its importance as an essential component for technological and economic growth. In this paper we highlight astronomy development in Nigeria, Nigeria's Space initiative and the contribution of astronomy to the success of Nigeria's Space initiative.
