The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer has mapped the entire sky in 4 infrared bands at 3.4, 4.6, 12 and 22 microns (W1..4). For a typical AGN power law spectrum with equal power in each octave, WISE is most sensitive in W1 and W2, and the W1-W2 color gives a good separation between the AGN spectrum and normal stars and galaxies. Stern et al. (2011) found 70 AGN per square degree in the COSMOS field with a color cut W1-W2 > 0.8, and the median redshift of these sources is about 1.4. The SED based evolving luminosity function of Hopkins et al. (2006) predicted about 100 AGN per square degree brighter than the W1 or W2 flux limit, with a median redshift of 1.3, showing that infrared surveys are a powerful tool for discovering AGN, especially those obscured by dust.
