Sprites and terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) are phenomena believed to be generated inside the thunderclouds by accelerated electrons that emit a flash of photons in optical and gamma-ray band. The nature of the physical connection between thunderclouds and these phenomena as well as the physical process responsible for the acceleration are still unknown. Temporal and positional correlative study between sprites and TGFs is of great interest whether those phenomena have the same origin or not.
Based on this scientific motivation, we are in the process of constructing a wide field optical camera system (GRT-WF) using off-the-shelf hardwares. Seven cameras will be set to point along azimuth directions, and one camera to point at zenith in order to cover the entire visible sky. The field of view of each camera is 60 x 60 deg. GRT-WF will be located at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), Fort Myers, Florida where a high thunderstorm activity during summer is observed. The events will be captured automatically by off-the-shelf software. Currently, we are in the final stage of installing the cameras at FGCU. We will discuss the preliminary results from our fist hurricane season in FL.
