It is by now well known that a significant minority of bright sources in the hard (>10 keV) X-ray sky are cataclysmic variables (CVs). The majority of these hard X-ray detected CVs belong to the subclass of magnetic systems called the intermediate polars (IPs). Unfortunately, the distances to IPs are in general poorly known, and hence their space density and X-ray luminosity function are both highly uncertain. Here I will provide updated estimates of both, based on a critical review of the literature and a new analysis of the BAT survey data and follow-up observations. I will present comparison of IPs with other subclasses of CVs, and discuss their contribution to the Galactic ridge.
