In this talk I will present the main results from a VLT FORS/ISAAC program aimed at optimizing the legacy value of the Swift mission: to characterize a homogeneous, X-ray selected, sample of 68 GRB host galaxies. The goals of the programme have been the (i) search of the hosts (success rate of 80%); (ii) measurement of emission line redshifts for those systems with unknown absorption line redshifts (10 new values secured); (iii) search for red systems through NIR imaging; (iv) survey of Ly-alpha emission at z = 2-4 (positive detection for about 40%). Finally, I present new X-shooter results that build on the aforementioned sample and results.
