The possible formation of comets in situ in the trans-Plutonian region is examined. An estimate is made of the rate of growth of initial small particles (about 0.0001 cm) in a nonturbulent gas-dust disk during their settling to its central plane and radial drift toward the sun. Bodies of cometary size might have formed as a result of gravitational instability in the presence of gas, when only a small fraction of all the dust in the trans-Plutonian region entered the dust layer.
