The 1.1-micron region of Cepheids and other cool stars contains lines of C I and Si I that can be used to give very sensitive diagnostics of Teff. The ratios, which are only weakly dependent on other parameters, yield relative temperatures accurate to 30 K. A model-independent determination of interstellar reddening can be made by comparing the ratio of line depths to photometric color indices. The relative temperatures derived from the line ratios have several important applications.
