The magnitudes at maximum and the rates of decline of the LMC novae are reviewed. The distance modulus of the LMC is derived at 18.70 + 0.20 or - 0.25 by applying the newly calibrated maximum magnitude versus rate of decline (MMRD) relationship. The result is in close agreement with determinations based on Cepheids. The MMRD properties in galaxies of different morphological types are compared.
