A novel class of instrument called the heterodyned holographic spectrometer is described. It uses a grating, but the measurements are taken in the Fourier domain. This combines the high etendue characteristic of interferometers with the nonscanning property associated with dispersive devices. An aperture of 20 mm would be well-matched to telescopes of even the Very Large class. The theory of the device, as well as simulated and real measurements with a prototype, are presented.
