Attention is given to certain atomic properties of metals which control the formation and stabilities of complexes with the amino acids; particular emphasis is given to the ionization potential. Ionic charge and ionic radius are also considered. It is noted that ligand-field effects may be important for the transition metals, but this property (ligand-field) is not considered in detail. The study has a bearing on the distribution of metals in the sedimentary cycle because of the presence of metal binders, the amino acids for example, in the oceans and some sediments.
