A minimum-bias sample of 23 nearby SNeII is used to derive their luminosity distribution. It is well represented by a Gaussian with M(B)(max) = -17.2(H0 = 50) and sigma (M) = 1.2. The faintest object of the sample, SN 1987A, can be drawn from the normal distribution, without the necessity of postulating many additional faint SNe, although some faint objects may have been missed. The low mean luminosity of SNeII tends to increase previous estimates of their frequency.
