The recently observed heavy-ion fusion hindrance at extreme sub-barrier energies is reviewed. The study is extended to lighter heavy-ion fusion reactions. A new measured result for 28Si+30Si (Q = 14.3 MeV) is presented. A systematics for reaction systems with positive Q-values has been developed. The impact of the hindrance phenomenon on astrophysics is discussed.
