Local-time (LT) distribution of topside equatorial density irregularity occurrences has been obtained with ROCSAT-1 data from 1999 to 2004 during high to moderate solar activity years. Seasonal variation of this local- time distribution indicates two different kinds of irregularity occurrence pattern. One pattern peaks at 21-22 hr LT then decreases toward later hours during the March and September equinoxes and the December solstice; and the other peaks one hour later at 22-23 hr LT during the June solstice. The cause for such different LT distribution is attributed to the LT distribution of instability triggering time from the wave structures created in relation to the evening plasma vortex that occurred after the reversal of zonal flow in the evening upper ionosphere. ROCSAT observations of the LT distribution of zonal flow reversal indicate one-hour delay during the June solstice in comparison with that in the other three seasons. Thus the statistical correlation between the zonal flow reversal and the irregularity occurrences further supports the latest theory that the equatorial irregularity occurrence is primarily related to the post-sunset ionospheric conditions without additional sources such as gravity wave seeding perturbations from atmospheric disturbances.
