It is critical to know the distance to an object if one wants to determine its physical characteristics. We report a rock-solid and precise measurement of the distance to the high-mass X-ray binary Cyg X-1, which contains the first black hole to be discovered. The distance was obtained by trigonometric parallax, using the Very Long Baseline Array, and has an uncertainty of 6%. This firm result allows accurate modeling of the system,
which yields both precision estimates of the physical characteristics of the binary system and a complete description of the black hole primary via measurements of its mass and spin.
