I present results from a compiled sample spanning a range of public deep-fields, including the GOODS, COSMOS, UKIDSS-UDS and MUSYC fields. Photometric redshifts for these fields were obtained using a homogenous approach using the GAZELLE photo-z code; stellar masses and star formation rates have been estimated by comparison to GALEV evolutionary synthesis models, spanning a wide range of galaxy evolution scenarios.
The derived redshift distributions show generally good agreement with predictions from semi-analytical models, based on simulations of cosmological structure formation. Mass-functions of these fields reveal a population of very massive, yet actively star-forming galaxies, in numbers exceeding predictions of current semi-analytical models and hence hinting at an as yet insufficiently understood formation channel producing this kind of galaxy.
