Recent high resolution and multi-wavelength observations of external galaxies have revealed unprecedented details of the structure of spiral arms; simulations of spiral galaxies must now account for these newly discovered features. I will discuss recent efforts to model spiral structure in disk galaxies. I will focus attention on the role of gravitational and magneto-hydrodynamic instabilities, as well as ultra-harmonic resonances, in forming spiral arm substructure, such as spurs, branches, and bifurcations. Though the large scale flow is dominated by the underlying spiral potential, localized effects of gas self-gravity control the growth of large clouds within the spiral arms. I will also review streaming motions and offsets between different components associated with the spiral arms. Streaming motions in M51 suggest that its spiral pattern is not long-lasting, or that out of plane motions must be significant. Finally, I will discuss how the offsets and substructure need to be accounted for in future simulations.
