The major results of the IRAS infrared satellite mission are reviewed. The attention is given to a description of the instrumentation and flight history of the satellite, and some of its observational data are compared with the results of ground-based surveys conducted recently at ESO. IRAS detected infrared radiation from about 10,000 galaxies the majority of which were optically faint spirals. The major spectral characteristics of two new galaxies identified in the IRAS survey (IRAS 1027-395 and IRAS 1318-314) are described, and their reproduced spectra are presented in a series of tables.
