Simultaneous optical and infrared light curve observations of the 13th magnitude star associated with the HEAO-1 X-ray source H2215 - 086 were made with the 3.8 m United Kingdom Infrared Telescope on Hawaii with a two-channel near-infrared photometer which measured K and J bands, and a UBV optical photometer which monitored the V band. The observations at all three wavelengths, which were searched for periodicities using Fourier transform techniques, showed a spectrum very similar to those of AM Her type cataclysmic variables and variations with a period of 21 minutes and amplitude of 0.4 magnitude together with a slower variation of amplitude 0.3 magnitude and a period of 4.03 hours. A power spectrum of the data also showed a subsidiary peak indicating variability on a 23 minute period. Spectroscopic and photometric observations of H2215 086 indicate that the radial velocity curve could be fitted with either a 4.025 or 4.850 hour orbital period. It is concluded that H2215 - 086 is an intermediate polar (DQ Her) type cataclysmic variable; and the system distance is estimated to be greater than approximately 400 parsecs.
