Accretion flows around black holes very often have centrifugal pressure dominated standing or oscillating shock waves. In steady shocks, they form at the locations where the Rankine-Hugoniot relations are satisfied. When the relations are not satisfied, the shocks become oscillatory. The cooling time scale matches with the infall time scale also. The post-shock region is the site where the Comptonization of the low energy photons take place and high energy X-rays are generated. The oscillating shocks produce oscillating X-ray intensity giving rise to the so-called Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs). We show how this understanding of the accretion shocks allow us to discuss in details the dynamical behaviour of the flow around a black hole, especially in the case of outburst sources.
