I will review several recent advances in our understanding of the origin of the elements, including work on the nucleosynthesis in the first stars, the site of the rapid neutron-capture process, and the creation of the most metal-rich stars in our Galaxy. I will emphasize the important role played by laboratory data of atomic properties, such as transistion probabilities, photoionization cross-sections and hyperfine splitting constants. The data that is most critical for further advances in the field of stellar abundance analysis will be highlighted as well.
