It is predicted that the release of lithium ions into the certain magnetically closed regions of the magnetopause as part of the Active Magnetospheric Particle Tracer Explorer (AMPTE) experiment will be useful in distinguishing between the several mechanisms which have been proposed for gradient drift entry (GDE) in the magnetosphere. It is shown that for charged particle entry to occur at a point on the magnetopause, the magnetic field must possess a gradient perpendicular to its direction and parallel to the magnetopause. A lithium ion release during a northward pointing interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is therefore recommended. The detection of lithium ions in the magnetosphere during such interplanetary conditions would demonstrate conclusively that charged particles can enter the magnetosphere by a process other than reconnection, and that entry probably occurs at all times.
