The structure and evolution of the LMC and SMC are characterized, summarizing the results of observational and theoretical studies presented at IAU Symposium No. 108, held in Tuebingen, West Germany, in September 1983. The MCs are seen as irregular galaxies without central masses and containing stars and clusters of widely varying ages, suggesting an extended star-formation period. The distances, total masses, and gaseous-matter masses are estimated as 50 kpc, 6 x 10 to the 9th solar mass, and 6 x 10 to the 8th solar mass for the LMC and 60 kpc, 1.5 x 10 to the 9th solar mass, and 7 x 10 to the 8th solar mass for the SMC. Other features discussed include a depletion of heavy elements relative to the Galaxy, a deficiency in interstellar dust, and the possible presence of single or grouped stars of very large mass. Consideration is given to the Cepheid variables in the MCs and their reddening corrections and variation fluctuations, the structure of the SMC, and the kinds of observations needed to expand knowledge of the MCs.
