The A-type shell stars are believed to represent the cool end of the Be/shell phenomenon and their study, therefore, may yield insights into the Be-star mechanism. Only a handful of A-type shell stars are known, and little is known about their evolutionary state. For the past few years we have been monitoring a number of A-type shell stars spectroscopically in order to detect variations and to learn something about the time scales of these variations. In addition, in an attempt to increase the number of known A-type shell stars, and thus improve the statistics, we have been engaged in a spectroscopic survey of selected regions in the field. To date we have discovered five new shell stars in the field, two of which show pronounced shell features. Finally, to learn more about the evolutionary state of these stars, we have obtained spectra of nearly 100 open cluster stars in the approximate region of the HR diagram where the field shell stars occur in 10 open clusters. We will present the results of the analysis of these cluster-star spectra, our discoveries in the field, and preliminary results on shell-star variations in the poster.
