The amphoteritos are a subclass of the olivine-hypersthene chondrites characterized by comparatively iron-rich olivine (Fa 27-31 ) and orthopyroxene (Fs 23-27 ) and a low content (1-5%) of nickel-iron. Other minerals include plagioclase (composition around An 10 ), troilite, chromite and a phosphate mineral (apatite and/or merrillite). Most of them are poorly chondritic and the chondrules are not well-defined, and they are usually much brecciated. The rodites, which are frequently classed with the amphoterites, are quite distinct, being hypersthene achondrites.
