Monochromatic waves with frequencies close to or above proton gyroharmonics were observed in the vicinity of the geomagnetic equator by the GEOS spacecraft. The waves consist of harmonically-related emissions and propagate in a direction perpendicular to the DC magnetic field. The frequency spectrum indicates strong nonlinear coupling between the components of the spectrum. Two different energy sources are identified for destabilizing these waves : a ring-like distribution of 10 keV protons, and a sharp drift boundary of these protons. Both kinds of proton distribution can excite a nonresonant instability (flute mode) near the proton gyrofrequency and its harmonics. Experimental results are compared to growth rate calculations.
