Venus frustrates telescopic observation with its cloud cover of sulfur
dioxide. The orbiting Magellan spacecraft used a radar system to
penetrate the clouds and map Venus' surface. Radio waves beamed to the
surface revealed volcanic activity has created most of the geologic
features and materials on the planet.
