Astronomers and photographers have been combining their efforts since the early 1800s in France. At the time, astronomers were mapping the sky, which required precise measurements. Photography was seen as a way to eliminate human error in the calculations. It took years of work at the Harvard College Observatory using the Great Refractor, then the largest telescope in the world, to adapt telescopes to the photographic process.
