Observations of anisotropies in the angular distributions of energetic protons and electrons (300keV) in the Earth's distant plasma sheet indicated the occurrence of transient electric fields with a significant field aligned component, which last for 10 sec. Incorporating measurements of energy spectra and anisotropies by instruments on board the IMP-8 spacecraft during periods of intense antiparallel proton-electron field aligned streaming for a number of such events, the average magnitude of the transient electric field is estimated at 10mV/m.
