During the International Magnetospheric Study (IMS) from 1975 to 1978 four satellites of the Prognoz series were launched, equipped with scientific instruments for measuring plasma and magnetic fields in the near-earth and interplanetary space as well as solar electromagnetic and corpuscular radiation. The paper describes the modes of plasma and field measurements of these satellites. The paper gives also a brief review of original results on plasmasphere heating, ion composition of the plasma mantle and penetration of solar wind plasma into the magnetosphere.
