A process of energy accumulation in icy bodies is described: the volumetric electrolysis of ice that contains foreign inclusions. The electrolysis occurs when an electric current generated by the body's movement in an external magnetic field (e.g., planetary magnetospheres, the solar wind, etc.) flows through the body. The hypothesis that an ice-rich moon-like planet (i.e. Phaethon) once existed between Mars and Jupiter is advanced. It is suggested that if this planet had been affected by the solar wind with a mass of 2 x 10 to the -11th solar mass/year during about one-billion years, it could have accumulated the energy sufficient for its explosion.
