Photoelectric observations of Io since 1974 show significant year-to-year changes not observed in the other Galilean satellites of Jupiter; notably, (1) an abrupt brightness decrease midway through the 1977/78 observing season, and (2) substantial year-to-year changes in rotational lightcurve shape, which are interpreted in terms of an albedo model that ascribes them to active volcanic processes.
