An attempt was made to determine longitudinal surface magnetic fields in eight A-type shell stars from observations of circularly polarized light in the wings of H-alpha and H-beta produced by the Zeeman effect. No fields were detected above the 2 sigma level of significance. An upper limit of approximately 300 gauss can be placed on any fields which may exist. It is suggested that the possible connection between these stars and the Be stars implies that large fields may not exist in the latter. The sample of stars was also observed for continuum linear polarization. No intrinsic polarization was found. The lack of intrinsic linear polarization supports the conclusions of Dominy and Smith (1977) that the A-type shells are predominantly neutral
