The conclusions of a massive study of QSO absorption lines (Sargent et
al.) are critically examined. It is found that tight constraints may not
be placed on the nature of pressure-confined clouds nor on the
intergalactic medium presumably confining them. An alternative model, of
gravitationally bound clouds, is found to be equally viable
