The hydrocarbon contents of two sediments from the Carboniferous Formation of East Scotland have been investigated by gas chromatography, combined gas chromatographymass spectrometry and micro-scale i.r. spectroscopy. Isoprenoid alkanes have been identified in both of the samples examined, indicating their biological origin and adding to the accumulating evidence that such compounds are ubiquitously distributed in ancient sediments. The small differences observed in the composition of the total alkane fractions provide chemical evidence of the differences in either the mode of deposition of these two somewhat similar deposits or the constitution of the biological materials contributing to their formation.
