Scientific paper

From observational material obtained on the Pleiades region during 1965, 1966 and 1967 we have extended considerably our previous studies on flare stars on a 16 square degrees region centered in Alcyone. Based on spectroscopic results obtained by Kraft and Greenstein using 200 Å/mm dispersion, we interpret that an important critical limit of chromospheric activity can be set in the late stars close to the main sequence. It is possible to predict the type of stars that show flare phenomenon and its possible degree of convection. We propose that ~K4 is the earlier spectral limit in the Pleiades, ~K0 in Orion and NGC 2264 while it corresponds to ~K7-M0 in older, more evolved clusters (> 4 x 10^8 years) including the UV Ceti stars of the solar vicinity. In spite of the great number of observations available, none of the 112 flare stars known in the Pleiades shows the "slow" flare characteristics found in Orion.
