HR 7308 (HD 180583) was observed 132 times with the spectrophotometer CO RAVEL (radial velocity) and 10 times in the Geneva photometric system. These data reveal that this bright star is a new cepheid. It is shown that it probably belongs to population I. If this is true, the period (1.49107 d) is the shortest actually known for classical cepheids.
The peak-to-peak amplitude of variation in radial velocity has decreased during the survey period from about 18 to 4 km s-1. Thus, HR 7308 is the first case of a single-mode classical cepheid exhibiting strong amplitude variations. New radial velocity and photometric observations are planned in order to follow the future variations of the amplitude. If this variation is periodic (period of at least 600 d), HR 7308 would be the first classical cepheid exhibiting the Blazhko effect.
