The paper presents the results of photometric observations (Walraven system) of Sk 160, the optical counterpart of the massive X-ray binary SMCX-1 obtained between 1979 and 1982. Combining these with previously published data, an orbital period of 3.89233 + or - 0.00008 days is derived in agreement with the period obtained from X-ray data. The double-wave optical light curve of Sk 160 is the result of ellipsoidal variations, and X-ray heating of the primary. The minimum in the light curve near superior conjunction is symmetric and coincides with the times of X-ray eclipses (phase 0.0), that near inferior X-ray conjunction is asymmetric and comes early by about 0.02 orbital cycles. The depths of the minima are 0.109 + or - 0.006 and 0.089 + or - 0.008 mag, respectively. These values support the previous conclusion that SMCX-1 contains a luminous accretion disk. Long-term periodic modulations of the optical light curve, with amplitudes in excess of 0.015 mag have not been found.
