Near-infrared spectrograms at 48-A/mm dispersion show a strong 10830-A wavelength He I line in the spectrum of the cool (M4 III) giant Hr 1105. The absorption-emission profile of the line varies with time. The absorption component has an equivalent width as great as 2.5 A. In view of its high excitation potential the 10830-A line might be of chromospheric origin.
