This paper discusses recent topics in soliton physics including Zakharov's (1972) equations which describe the modulational instability of the Langmuir condensate. The relation between the Zakharov equations and the nonlinear Schroedinger equation in the small Mach number regime was considered, focusing on the adiabatic invariants and their relation to conservation laws. Experimental results on nonlinear deep-water waves and some aspects of spiral density-wave theory were discussed. Behavior of slow Langmuir solitons, the modulational instability of deep-water waves, and density waves in galaxies were described.
