The characteristics of 21 chains of galaxies with measured redshifts are analyzed. Absolute photographic magnitudes are found to range from -15.5 to -21.9, with higher luminosities predominating, and most chains are made up of four or fewer members. The presence of galaxy chains and elongated structures as well as objects intermediate in form between these and rarefied groups of galaxies is interpreted to imply the evolution of protracted formations into chains and then random groups. The coexistence of elliptical and spiral galaxies in chains is noted, as well as the bright H alpha emission lines often exhibited by group and chain components. The radial velocities of chain galaxies are shown to range from 120 km/sec to 2000 km/sec, with most members of the same chain exhibiting similar redshifts, having a mean velocity differential of 250 km/sec which is attributable to rotation.
