The equilibrium and stability of shielded magnetic flux ropes in the plasma of the solar atmosphere are considered for the case of ropes expanding uniformly along their minor radius. As the rope rises to the surface, such an expansion could result in violation of both the necessary and the sufficient conditions for stability against spiral modes, thereby producing fine structure in the rope magnetic field. However, external disruptive forces would be needed to split the rope into separate strands.
